SEWELL, NJ—Mercer County Community College (1-8) sophomore guard Torren Greene scored 28 points as the Vikings defeated the seventh-ranked USCAA Division I Manor College Blue Jays (4-3), 80-76, in the Semifinals of the 42nd Roadrunner Classic at the Physical Education Center at Rowan College South Jersey-Gloucester.
The first half saw five ties and 15 lead changes. Both teams led by five points in the first half. Manor took a 25-20 lead with 7:37 remaining on sophomore center Nissir Cook's (Philadelphia, PA/Philadelphia Academy Charter) layup and free throw. The Blue Jays took its last lead of the game, 32-30, on senior forward Cheikh Diagne's (Philadelphia, PA/Northeast) with 3:37 left. However, Manor was held scoreless for the remainder of the first half. Mercer County led 37-32 with 0:38.4 left on freshman guard Cameron James' free throw. The Vikings led 37-32 at halftime. Greene led both teams with 18 points. Junior guard Manny Roach (Medford, NJ/Life Center Academy) paced the Blue Jays with 16 points.
Manor ended its 4:56 scoreless string over both halves on junior forward Deacon Linder's (Philadelphia, PA/Hardy Williams Academy [Mastery]) layup with 18:41 left in the second half. The Blue Jays closed the gap to 52-49 on Roach's jump shot with 14:25 remaining. Mercer County scored 13 straight points between 13:23 and 9:06 left (a 4:17 stretch) and expanded its lead to 65-49 (which was also its largest) on sophomore guard Tomas Money's free throw. The Vikings also took its first double-digit lead of the game during this run, 59-49, on Greene's layup with 11:59 remaining. Manor was held scoreless for 6:28 until sophomore guard Ihsan Beyah's (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Wood) with 7:57 left. Beyah's three-point basket began a 23-7 run between 7:57 and 1:46 remaining (a 5:11 stretch). The Blue Jays held the Vikings to three field goals made during this run. Manor tied the game at 72 on Cook's layup with 1:46 left. Greene's free throws with 0:58.2 remaining gave Mercer County the lead for good, 76-74. Senior guard Tyray Cooper's (Baltimore, MD/Woodlawn) layup with 0:05.4 remaining got the Blue Jays within 78-76. Sophomore guard Drew Parrish's free throws with 0:01.3 left completed the scoring for the game. Manor outscored the Vikings in the second half, 44-43. There were 18 lead changes and seven ties for the game. Roach led both teams with 16 points. Sophomore guard Joell Idrovo paced Mercer County with 13 points. Greene contributed 10 second-half points for the Vikings.
The loss snapped the Blue Jays' four-game Roadrunner Classic and In-Season Tournament winning streaks.
The NJCAA Region XIX Division III Rowan College South Jersey-Gloucester Roadrunners (6-8) defeated the NCAA Division III Eastern University Eagles Junior Varsity (1-3), 92-58, in the other semifinal. The Roadrunners will play the Vikings in the Championship Game on Saturday, December 6 at 4 p.m.
Statistical Leaders: Roach led Manor both teams with 32 points and five steals. Diagne scored 10 points and paced the Blue Jays with seven assists. Cook led both benches and teams with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
In addition to Greene, Idrovo scored 22 points. Freshman guard Cameron James added 10 points. Parrish led both benches and teams with eight assists.
