MANOR COLLEGE MEN’S BASKETBALL DEFEATS NCAA DIVISION III EASTERN UNIVERSITY JUNIOR VARSITY IN THE ROADRUNNER CLASSIC CONSOLATION GAME

SEWELL, NJ—Manor College (5-3) senior forward Bryce Nwobu (Marlton, NJ/Cherokee) led both teams with 21 points as the seventh-ranked USCAA Division I  Blue Jays defeated the NCAA Division III Eastern University Junior Varsity Eagles (1-4), 81-72, in the Consolation Game of the 42nd Roadrunner Classic at the Physical Education Center at Rowan College South Jersey-Gloucester.

The Blue Jays previously played the Eagles Junior Varsity on November 29, 2017 in St. Davids, Pennsylvania when Manor was a NJCAA Region XIX Division II member. Manor won, 91-63.  Manor previously played a junior varsity school on November 18, 2021 when they defeated the NCAA Division III Immaculata University Mighty Macs at home, 95-81. 

Manor previously played in the Roadrunner Classic Consolation Game on December 3, 2022 versus the NJCAA Region XIX Division III Ocean County College Vikings.  The Vikings won, 94-76.

The first 8:55 of the first half saw multiple ties and lead changes.  The Junior Varsity Eagles took its last lead on first-year guard Nic Kimball's layup with 15:00 left. After first-year guard Sebastian Gonzalez' three-point basket tied the game at 12 with 11:20 remaining, the Blue Jays answered with a run of its own.  Manor went on a 16-4 run between 11:05 and 6:37 left (a 4:28 stretch) and expanded its lead to 28-16 on sophomore guard Ihsan Beyah's (Philadelphia, PA/Archbishop Wood) layup.  Defensively the Blue Jays allowed one field goal during this run.   During this run, Manor took the lead for good, 15-12, on senior forward Cheikh Diagne's (Philadelphia, PA/Northeast) three-point basket with 11:05 remaining. The Blue Jays also took its first double-digit lead of the game during this run, 26-16, on Nwobu's free throws with 6:53 left  They maintained a double-digit lead for the remainder of the first half.  Manor took its largest leads three times in the first half (40-25 with 2:05 left, 42-27 with 0:30.3 left, and 44-29 with 0:02.3 left.  The Blue Jays led at halftime, 44-29.  This is the fourth time this season Manor has led at halftime in double-digits.  Nwobu led both teams with 12 points.  Junior guard Manny Roach (Medford, NJ/Life Center Academy) contributed 11 points for the Blue Jays.

Eastern University Junior Varsity trimmed Manor's lead to single digits, 44-36, on sophomore guard Bryson Spruell's three-point basket with 18:06 left.  Trey Wallace's layup with 17:20 remaining in the second half got the Junior Varsity Eagles within 44-38.  They embarked on an 11-2 run between 17:01 and 14:31 left (a 2:30 stretch) and expanded their lead to 55-40 on Diagne's layup.  They also did not allow a field goal during this run.  During this run, Roach's three-point basket with 16:05 left gave them its second double-digit lead of the contest, 49-38.   The Blue Jays maintained a double-digit lead over the next 12:45.  Manor took its largest lead of the game, 69-51, with 9:09 remaining on senior guard Tyray Cooper's (Baltimore, MD/Woodlawn) layup.  The Junior Varsity Eagles responded with a 17-5 run between 8:48 and 3:00 left (a 5:48 stretch) got as close as 74-68 on Kimball's layup. Manor scored one field goal during this run.  The Blue Jays got back to its final double-digit lead, 79-69, on sophomore center Nissir Cook's (Philadelphia, PA/Philadelphia Academy Charter) layup with 1:28 remaining.  Manor outscored Eastern University Junior Varsity in the second half, 43-37.  Kimball led both teams with 14 points.  Spruell added 13 points for the Junior Varsity Eagles.  Nwobu paced the Blue Jays with 11 second-half points.

Roach (see article) and Kimball were named to the All-Roadrunner Classic Team.

The NJCAA Region XIX Division III Rowan College South Jersey-Gloucester Roadrunners (7-8) defeated the NJCAA Region XIX Division II Mercer County Community College Vikings (1-9), 85-80, in overtime, in the Championship.  This is the 26th time the Roadrunner won the Classic Championship and its first since 2018.

Statistical Leaders: In addition to Nwobu, Roach scored 18 points and led both teams with 18 points.  Diagne scored 15 points and paced both teams with 10 rebounds.  Cook came off the bench and scored 11 points and contributed six rebounds.

Kimball led the Eagles Junior Varsity and both benches with 18 points,  He also paced both teams with 11 rebounds.  Spurell also came off the Eastern Junior Varsity bench and scored 15 points.
