JENKINTOWN, PA—Monroe Community College (3-2-1) midfielders Lucas Egan (sophomore) and Ryan Gray (freshman) scored second-half goals and goalkeeper Zach Mandara made 10 saves as they shutout Manor College (2-5-0), 2-0, in a non-conference match-up.
The Tribunes nearly scored in the fifth minute of the match Egan's header went over the crossbar inside the 18-yard line. Sophomore forward Prince Kermue's shot was cleared by Manor sophomore defenseman Kyle Goldbloom (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) in the ninth minute. Monroe sophomore defenseman/midfielder Adrian Minott's shot inside the 18 was cleared by Blue Jays' freshman defenseman Steven Heller (Philadelphia, PA/Franklin Towne Charter) in the 14th minute. In the 22nd minute, Manor freshman midfielder Jehbleh Jah's (Philadelphia, PA/George Washington) made a corner kick to freshman forward Phedel Saye (Philadelphia, PA/Northeast). However, Saye's shot on goal went over the cross bar. Within the same minute, Minott's shot was blocked and Egan's rebound was saved by Manor sophomore goalkeeper Thomas Hipwell (Cheltenham, PA/Cheltenham). Monroe sophomore forward Samuel Jiggins' header in the 32nd minute was saved by Hipwell. Approximately two minutes later, Monroe sophomore defenseman Niko Nitti's shot was blocked. In the 39th minute, Tribune sophomore defenseman Julian Macdonald's corner kick was punched away by Hipwell. Manor sophomore midfielder Dashan Santiago's (Philadelphia, PA/George Washington) shot went wide right of the goal in the 42nd minute. In the closing seconds of the first half, Hipwell made a sliding tackle on Nitti to stop another scoring opportunity. The game was scoreless at halftime.
Jah's shot beyond the 18 was blocked in the 47th minute. Monroe sophomore midfielder Vasbert Harry's shot went wide left in the 49th. Kermue's shot on goal hit below the cross bar and deflected to the left of the goal in the 53rd. In the 54th minute, Manor sophomore defenseman Tyler Macintyre's (Philadelphia, PA/Calvin Christian Academy) shot beyond the 18 went over the cross bar. Monroe struck first in the 55th minute. Kermue's shot was deflected off of Hipwell and Egan kicked the rebound into the net. Minott's shot in the 58th went over the cross bar. Blue Jay freshman defenseman Eddy Rangel's (Philadelphia, PA/Father Judge) shot beyond the 18 went wide left. Macdonald made a corner kick to freshman midfielder Peter Brennan in the 62nd minute. However, Brennan's header was blocked. In the 63rd minute, Rangel's shot on goal beyond the 18 was deflected. Kermue's shot in the 66th was deflected out of bounds on the right side of the net. Jah's shot in the 67th went wide left. Saye's shot in the 75th deflected out of bounds over the cross bar. Monroe sophomore defenseman Kyle DeBrine's indirect kick was punched away by Hipwell in the 78th minute. The Tribunes added an insurance goal in the 87th to close out the scoring. Nitti's passed to Gray inside the 18 and kicked it past Hipwell in the left side of the net for a 2-0 lead.
This was the second time in four home matches Manor has been shutout at home this season. They were blanked at home three times in eight home games in 2015.
This was the first meeting between the two schools. Since 2008, the Blue Jays are 6-2-0 versus non-Region XIX opponents. This was Manor's first match versus a Region III opponent.
The Blue Jays' next home game is versus Division I Mercer County Community College 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, October 5.
