JENKINTOWN, PA—National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) Region XIX Division III Atlantic Cape Community College (12-5) led in most of their sets as the eighth-ranked Buccaneers defeated the Manor College, 3-0, in the Blue Jays' season and home openers at the Gymnasium.
Manor led early in the first set 2-1, but Atlantic Cape went on an early run, and won the first set, 25-13.
The Blue Jays got within 4-2 early in the second set, but the Buccaneers scored 11 straight points, and went on to win the second set, 25-9.
The third set was the most competitive and closest of the match. It was tied at two before Atlantic Cape took the lead for good. Manor got two points multiple times early and halfway in the third set (6-4, 11-9, and 13-11). The Buccaneers took its largest leads, seven points, twice late in this set (20-13 and 22-15). The Blue Jays got within 23-20 on a pair of blocks and a service error. Atlantic Cape scored the next two points and won the third set and match, 25-20.
Statistical Leaders: Freshman Emiliano Hernandez (Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico/Cobaej) led the Blue Jays in kills and was second on the team in total attacks (13). Ben Kopyn paced Manor with 13 total attacks. Freshman Nate Perez (Newark, NJ/Donald M. Payne School of Technology) led the Blue Jays with three service aces. Defensively, sophomore Jallah Murvee (Philadelphia, PA/Upper Darby) paced the squad with seven digs. Evan Azoro also contributed five digs. Hernandez led Manor with 4.0 points.
Freshman middle hitters Isaac Fishman and Daymeon Hallock led the Buccaneers with six kills. Fishman and freshman outside hitter-libero Jake Khuc shared the team lead with seven digs. Hallock paced Atlantic Cape with nine assists, followed by Khuc who contributed eight. Fishman (12), freshman opposite Brandon Mendoza (11), and freshman defensive specialist Matthew Vibora (10) each contributed double-digit total attacks for the Buccaneers. Freshman opposite-setter Matthew Viruet led the team with five service aces. Hallock also paced Atlantic Cape in points (8.0), followed by Fishman and Viruet (7.0).
Next match: Manor hosts the NJCAA Region XIX Division III Harcum College Bears (7-11 as of March 23) on Tuesday, March 31 at 6 p.m. at the Gymnasium in Jenkintown, Pennsylvania.
